th International Conference on Genomics & Pharmacogenomics - 15-16 June 2017, London, United Kingdom
[Source: Research & Innovation] Genomics-2017Genomics is an area within genetics that concerns the sequencing and analysis of an organism’s genome. Genomics also involves the study of intragenomic processes such as epistasis, heterosis and pleiotropy as well as the interactions between loci and alleles within the genome. The fields of molecular biology and genetics are mainly concerned with the study of the role and function of single genes, a major topic in today’s biomedical research. By contrast, genomics does not involve single gene research unless the purpose is to understand a single gene’s effects in context of the entire genome. Genomics-2017is an excellent opportunity for the delegates from Universities and Institutes to interact with the world class Scientists. Genomics-2017will provide a perfect platform to all the Scientists, Researchers, Students and Business Delegates to approach and deliver all the attendees about the latest scientific advancements on the respective sphere.

[Source: Research & Innovation] Join us at BioTransR and learn how to get to the analysis and interpretation of your data faster. The datasets that are generated today are complex, and involve many different types of data. The consequence is that the integration of multiple types expertise is necessary. In this meeting Data Scientists and translational researchers will work together to build a common understanding of today’s research data challenges. The aim is to find ways to help fulfil the promise of better health through the optimal use of data. It also wants to give Translational Researchers the knowledge and the tools they need to collaborate on making sense of Translational Research data faster. This meeting is being organised by IMI funded project eTRIKS, which over the course of 4 years has helped 41 translational research projects to get more value out of their data. It has become apparent over the course of those 4 years that the awareness about data infrastructure that is available for Translational Research is lacking.

Policy seminar: Cultural heritage policies for a troubled Europe - Proposals from the CulturalBase Social Platform - 31 January 2017, Bozar, Brussels
[Source: Research & Innovation] Europe is in trouble. The Great Recession has heavily hit Southern Europe and has polarized the Continent between North and South. Growing nationalism in many EU countries and the increasing division of national societies provoke a tendency to fragmentation. Racism and xenophobia are also on the rising nearly everywhere. The crisis is deep and manifold and there are not simple remedies for it. But some of the most important European troubles are cultural in nature and others, like the economic ones, can be fruitfully connected to culture and cultural development. Therefore, cultural policy presumably can play a significant role in facing the current situation. The European Year of Cultural Heritage will offer a strategic opportunity for highlighting the benefits of acting on this field. This policy seminar organized by CulturalBase aims to contribute to clarify the path that cultural heritage policies should follow for better addressing the challenges that Europe is confronting nowadays. JRC Study on Radionuclide Half-life Length - Safeguarding the unit Becquerel (Bq) - Tue, 10/01/2017 - 10:13
[Source: JRC] The exponential decay of radionuclides as a function of time is a cornerstone of nuclear physics. Decay constants for spontaneous radioactive decay are considered invariable in time and space. This convenient trait allows projecting activity values to a point of time in the past or the future. The exponential-decay law has many applications, e.g. in nuclear dating for archaeology, geo- and cosmochronology, dosimetry in nuclear medicine, nuclear waste management, etc.

The Clinton Engineer Works was the site of the Manhattan Project's World War II production facilities that provided the enriched uranium used in the bombing of Hiroshima in August 1945. Its X-10 Graphite Reactor produced the first samples of plutonium from a reactor. Located just south of the town of Clinton, Tennessee, it included the production facilities of the K-25, Y-12 and S-50 projects, various utilities, and the township of Oak Ridge. The Manhattan District Engineer, Kenneth Nichols, moved the Manhattan District headquarters there from Manhattan in August 1943. Many construction workers were housed in large temporary communities, including Happy Valley. The construction labor force peaked at 75,000. Oak Ridge was established to house the operating staff, which peaked at 50,000 workers just after the war. It was developed by the federal government as a segregated community; black residents lived in an area known as Gamble Valley, in government-built hutments of one-room shacks.

[Source: JRC] The JRC – hosting the European Reference Laboratory on Food Contact Materials – contributed to a study to showing the impact of the nature of food in its "attractiveness" to contaminants from plastic packaging. The focus was on the migration of the chemical compound benzophenone from low-density polyethylene. The study revealed how specific foods and packaging polymers interact (mathematics of transfer of components from packaging into foods) to better predict migration and ultimately exposure to chemicals from food contact materials.

A new CRM to make mercury measurements in food more reliable - Tue, 03/01/2017 - 01:02
[Source: JRC] JRC scientists developed a new certified reference material (CRM) to improve the accuracy of methylmercury measurements in food. This CRM (ERM-AE671) consists of isotopically labelled methylmercury with certified values for the isotopic composition. Used as internal standard, it will make the measurements of methylmercury more accurate.

The Wikipedia article of the day for January 3, 2017 is Smilodon.
Smilodon, the saber-toothed tiger, is an extinct genus that lived in the Americas up to 2.5 million years ago, during the Pleistocene epoch. It was named in 1842 and identified by fossils from Brazil. The largest collection of its fossils has come from the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, California. The species S. gracilis and S. fatalis lived mostly in North America. A third species, the South American S. populator (meaning destroyer), was perhaps the largest known member of the family of cats, at 220 to 400 kg (490 to 880 lb) and 120 cm (47 in) in height. Overall, saber-toothed tigers were stronger than any modern cat, with well-developed forelimbs, big jaws, and long, slender upper canines, adapted for precision killing. In North America, they hunted large herbivores such as bison and camels, pinning their prey before biting it. They probably lived in habitats that provided cover for ambushing prey, such as forests and shrubland. They died out at the same time that most North and South American megafauna disappeared, during a period of climate change about 10,000 years ago.

The Wikipedia article of the day for January 2, 2017 is English Benedictine Reform.
The English Benedictine Reform in the late tenth century was the most important religious and intellectual movement in the later Anglo-Saxon period. The reformers sought to replace married secular clergy in monasteries with celibate contemplative monks who followed the Rule of Saint Benedict. The court of Æthelstan (924–39), the first king of the whole of England, began a cosmopolitan trend; future reformers such as Æthelwold of Winchester, Oswald of Worcester, and Dunstan, Archbishop of Canterbury, learned from Continental exponents of Benedictine monasticism. The reformers had close relations with the crown, furthering its interests and depending on its support, especially under King Edgar (959–75). Influential artistic workshops established by Æthelwold reached a high standard of craftsmanship in manuscript illustration, sculpture and gold and silver, and his monasteries produced scholarship and competent prose and poetry in the elaborate hermeneutic style of Latin. His Winchester school helped create the standard vernacular West Saxon literary language, and his pupil Ælfric was its most eminent writer.
