Leena Peltonen School of Human Genomic - 21-25 August 2016, Hinxton, Cambridge, United Kingdom (via Research & Innovation)
This is a uniquely fascinating time in human genetics and genomics, as the field moves beyond the cataloguing of associated variation towards fundamental biological inference and translational implementation. The programme will cover a range of topics including our current understanding of the genomics of rare and complex human diseases. There will be sessions addressing gene regulation and functional analysis. The latest advances in sequencing technology and the future of whole genome and clinical sequencing will also be discussed. The schedule is highly interactive with presentations by the tutors and students on cutting-edge topics in human genomics. The summer school is more akin to a ‘science summer camp’ for graduate students with discussions and debates on the future of human genomics. A unique feature is the one-to-one mentoring on all aspects of genomics, including advice on publishing and pursuing an academic research career.

The main aim of the research was to study the practical implementation of distributed propulsion and the implications of using hybrid power architectures, i.e. architectures that combine different power sources such as gas turbines, advanced batteries or fuel cells. The proposed concept involves a propulsor built into the tail of the plane. This component adds thrust by re-accelerating air slowed down by contact with the fuselage.

SIS2016: First Conference on Social Impact of Science - 25-29 July 2016, Barcelona, Spain (via Research & Innovation)
The 1st Conference on Social Impact of Science (SIS2016) will provide a framework where research groups from diverse contexts and domains will be able to discuss these existing good practices, as well as the processes for further improvement and innovation. Furthermore, SIS2016 will generate new bonds between the different actors involved in this initiative including researchers, scientific agencies, science stakeholders and civil society Analysing, communicating and improving social impact is one of the most pressing demands to all scientific fields. Most research groups are willing to assume this task, which is still very difficult due to the lack of indicators, repositories and experiences. Nevertheless, there are some scientific domains where significant steps have been already taken. There are also some countries where universities and science agencies are very advanced in the construction of these indicators.

The results, published on 21 April 2016 in Cell journal, may also provide hints how the life will evolve in future.
