EURINT 2020 Conference | EU and its neighbourhood: enhancing EU actorness in the eastern borderlands - 14-16 May 2020, Iasi, Romania
[Source: Research & Innovation] The Centre for European Studies within Faculty of Law from Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi (Romania) organizes the 9th EURINT edition. The event is part of the EURINT conference series which was successfully launched in 2013 in the frame of the Jean Monnet Life Long Learning Programme. Since 2013, the EURINT conference series has established itself as a visible academic event in the field of European Studies and in this regard we aim at developing it into a traditional conference series. EURINT 2020 | EU and its neighbourhood: enhancing EU actorness in the eastern borderlands will, first, seek to bring additional insights into the way the EU policies are being framed and adapted in order to hamper the imbalances at the level of the borderlands between the EU and non-EU states in Eastern Europe. Second, it will assess the implication of the neighbourhood instruments in the borderland regions and try to provide answers about level of attractiveness the EU’s specific policies and instruments. Since the EU’s essential values such as good governance, democracy, economic prosperity and security have been constantly under pressure in the past years in the Eastern neighbourhood of the EU, it is interesting to gauge whether the EU can be still regarded as a source of political and economic support for the countries in the region.

Making Sense of Science for Policy under Conditions of Complexity and Uncertainty - 11 February 2020, Dublin, Ireland
[Source: Research & Innovation] A workshop organised by SAPEA on their latest report linked to the latest scientific opinion of the EC Group of Chief Scientific Advisors organised with the Royal Irish Academy. The consultation of good quality and evidence based science advice is more than ever crucial for policymakers in their decisions today. However very often the policy issues for which scientific input is most relevant are the ones where the science itself is often complex and uncertain. This challenge is being tackled by SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies). SAPEA is part of the European Commission’s Scientific Advice Mechanism and together with the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors provides independent scientific advice to European Commissioners to support their decision-making.

HBP Curriculum Workshop: Measuring and modelling brain states - 28-29 March 2020, Sölden, Austria
[Source: Research & Innovation] The final workshop of the 3rd HBP Curriculum Workshops Series invites researchers interested in measuring and modelling brain states at multiple scales. At the cellular level, the appearance of different brain states (such as wake, sleep, anesthesia) are reviewed at the scale of neurons, from extracellular recordings in both, human and animal models. At a larger scale, it will be discussed how brain states differ from the viewpoint of the whole brain, using electro-encephalogram and intracranial recordings in humans. From a modeling perspective, workshop participants will learn how cellular data can be used to build model networks of spiking neurons and how mean-field techniques are used to derive population models of different brain states from those network models. Such population models can be integrated in The Virtual Brain environment to yield simulations at the level of the whole brain. Together, these techniques can bridge scales, from neurons to the whole brain and provide an integrated view of brain states and their responsiveness.
