Events - Stakeholder Workshop: “Shaping how Horizon Europe is implemented” - 30 January 2019, Committee of Regions, Brussels-Belgium
[Source: Research & Innovation] The Commission starts preparing the implementation strategy for Horizon Europe – the next EU research & innovation framework programme. This goes in parallel with the legislative process in Council and Parliament. As the negotiations achieved a Partial General Approach in November and continue to advance at a high speed, we must progress equally fast on the implementation in order to be ready for the first calls in 2021. To achieve this goal we need the input from our stakeholders, and this is the reason for doing this workshop now. We will discuss the implementation of Horizon Europe with European umbrella organisations. We will cover the entire project life cycle, from proposal submission to efficient reporting and exploiting results. The rules and simplifications put in place for Horizon 2020 are a good starting point because they are widely acknowledged as a big step ahead. For Horizon Europe, we want to go further and make the programme yet easier to use and more attractive for the best researchers and innovators. In addition to the workshop, we will use the lessons learnt throughout the last years, and the European Court of Auditors special report on H2020 Simplification, which is very positive overall and provides constructive recommendations on how to simplify further.

Brain Research & Tech: How can Horizon Europe improve human brain health and performance? - 6 March 2019, Brussels, Belgium
[Source: Research & Innovation] Understanding and healing the human brain is one of the most exciting challenges of the 21st century. For centuries we have been attracted by the mystery of thought and consciousness, but it is only now that we have the technical and scientific foundation to advance. Is consciousness fundamental for the emergence of thought? Will Artificial Intelligence need to be conscious? And can we repair our mind once it has been damaged? Addressing these questions requires boldness, is necessarily interdisciplinary and needs close coordination amongst scientists, clinicians, industry partners and policy makers. In Europe, we decided to accept this challenge and push the frontiers of our knowledge through efforts such as the European flagship Human Brain Project, the European Open Science Cloud, and our investments in High Performance Computing… But how will we succeed? Aix-Marseille University - AMU, a European leader in brain health and technology, responds together with its scientific and industrial partners across the continent.

The Periodic Table and us: its history, meaning and element scarcity - 22 January 2019, Brussels
[Source: Research & Innovation] Join us on Tuesday 22 January 2019, from 14:30 – 16:30 in the European Parliament in Brussels, Room ASP 5G305 for the launching of the EuChemS Periodic Table depicting element scarcity, and to listen to a series of talks on the history of the periodic table, its meaning, and what lies ahead in the future. The event is chaired by Member of the European Parliament Catherine Stihler. Indeed, the phone you may be using right now to read this is made up of some 30 elements – over half of which may give cause for concern in the years to come because of increasing scarcity. With some 10 million smartphones being discarded or replaced every month in the European Union alone, serious actions to tackle the challenges ahead are needed. Element scarcity is intrinsically linked with discussions on the Circular Economy, more efficient recycling practices, innovative alternatives, consumer behaviour, and more besides. Unless solutions are provided, we risk seeing many of the natural elements that make up the world around us run out or become unusable – whether because of limited supplies, their location in conflict areas, or our incapacity to fully recycle them.
