[Source: Research & Innovation] We are pleased to announce the final conference of the European Commission‐funded ADVANCE project. The conference will bring together stakeholders, climate policy experts and scientists to discuss “Deep decarbonization for staying well below 2°C”. The Paris Agreement reinforced the objective of keeping global temperature rise well below 2 degrees Celsius, and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Such low stabilization requires swift action and an almost full-scale decarbonization of energy systems worldwide. Integrated Assessment Models (IAM) help quantifying the requirements for climate stabilization and the implications of international climate agreements in general and the Paris Agreement specifically, including costs, economic impacts, as well as feasibility of the rapid transformative changes they involve at the global and regional scales. The ADVANCE project performed model developments that allow a renewed and improved assessment of climate change mitigation strategies. The project also performed a detailed assessment of the INDCs, and explored pathways towards 2°C and 1.5°C stabilization.
