Biofuels from algae: a budding technology yet to become viable - 29 Feb 2016 (via JRC)

Despite high expectations and extensive research and investment in the last decade, technological options are still in developing stages and key resources for algal growth are still too onerous for economically viable production of algal biofuels, according to a JRC literature review. The European Innovation Council – time to collect ideas (via EUREKA)

While the number of start-ups created in Europe is on a par with competitors such as the United States, Europe lags behind in disruptive innovation and in scaling start-ups into world-beating businesses. With this in mind, EU Research Commissioner Carlos Moedas launched the idea of a European Innovation Council (EIC) that could contribute to solve the problem. In a bottom-up approach, the European Commission is now asking all stakeholders for input, and has launched a Call for Ideas  in February 2016. The deadline for responses is 29 April 2016.

New Currents in Science: The Challenges of Quality (via Digital Agenda for Europe)

Date:From Thursday, 3 March, 2016 - 01:00 to Friday, 4 March, 2016 - 01:00Add to CalendarAdd to calendariCalendar • Outlook • Google Yahoo Venue:ISPRA, ItalyContact{"service": "share","counter": false,"to": ["facebook","twitter","googleplus","linkedin","e-mail"]}The challenges originate from the previous transformation from community-based ‘little’ science to industrial-scale ‘big’ science, which had effects on research-incentives and thus commitment and morale. The present transformation, that we call ‘information-age’ science, has enabled new social practices and sources of commitment to emerge, both within and outside of established science, that offer new ways of resolving the challenges of quality assurance. • For those involved in maintaining existing streams of production, application and advice, some key questions are: By what methodologies could the existing institutions accommodate to the new tendencies, for their mutual benefit? • By what means, including dialogues and participation, could the new forms of practice be guided in the development of appropriate quality procedures? This workshop will be devoted to a review of these new tendencies, and to communication among them, exploring amongst others, how the insights of Post-Normal Science can contribute to their understanding and way out.

#Audiobooks: #California’s Silicon Valley is home to the greatest concentration of #designers in the world: corporate #design offices at flagship #technology companies and volunteers at nonprofit NGOs; global design consultancies and boutique studios; research laboratories and academic design programs. Together they form the interconnected network that is Silicon Valley. #Apple products are famously “Designed in California,” but, as Barry Katz shows in this first-ever #history, the role of design in Silicon Valley began decades before #SteveJobs and Steve Wozniak dreamed up #Apple in a garage. Offering a thoroughly original view of the subject, Katz tells how design helped transform Silicon Valley into the most #powerful engine of innovation in the world. From Hewlett-Packard and Ampex in the 1950s to Google and Facebook today, design has provided the bridge between research and development, #art and #engineering, technical performance and human behavior. Katz traces the origins of all of the leading consultancies-including IDEO, frog, and Lunar-and shows the process by which some of the world’s most influential companies came to place design at the center of their business strategies. At the same time, universities, foundations, and even governments have learned to apply “design thinking” to their missions. Drawing on unprecedented access to a vast array of primary sources and interviews with nearly every influential design leader—including Douglas Engelbart, Steve Jobs, and Don Norman-Katz—reveals design to be the missing link in Silicon Valley’s ecosystem. #TowerReview.com📲 #iPhone #audio #books #movies #travel #reading by tower_review
